This film seemed to want to be more than it was. The film premiered on 8/29 at London’s FrightFest, yet the film’s fright aspects weren’t what I expected. In a synopsis for the film, it reads, “En route, the unit is attacked by German ‘Wehrwolf’ partisans, who stalk the fighters with the ultimate mission to pick them off one-by-one.” So with my deductive reasoning, I took a film being premiered at FrightFest along with “wehrwolfs” and put two and two together, although somehow I ended up with three. Now, I know what they say about assuming, so I’ll take the blame on this one. However, I need to mention that this is in no way a horror film. It’s a pretty by-the-numbers wartime film with some action moments.

Once I could get past that and appreciate the film for what it was, I enjoyed it far more. The wartime film was very well done; the visuals encompassed me on screen. Everything about it seemed very accurate, from costumes to wardrobe and more. I was a little underwhelmed by the story mainly because I felt that it had far more potential than what I saw on screen. Part of that was undoubtedly because I had a preconceived idea of what it should be. I would’ve loved to have seen actual werewolves mixed into the action. While there have been various takes on WWII, I feel that could’ve taken the severe aspects of this film and flipped them to an extent.

The action scenes in the film were fantastic; even though they were more claustrophobic than most war films, I think they added more to the movie. It made it a more personal affair than just a giant war epic. The alternative take on history was a unique angle but not enough to feel different from anything we’ve seen.
