So I’m going to start by saying I still don’t know how I feel about this movie. I saw it, tried to let it sink in, and I’m still wholly crossed. My first DVD was “The Matrix” I was the perfect demographic when the film came out, and I loved (and still do) everything about it. Not only was it a beautiful film but it also gave you something to think about. It takes you down a rabbit hole, one that you honestly can’t answer. I mean, are we in a computer simulation? If we are, and it’s a good one, no one would ever know. So I’m not a conspiracy theorist, I honestly don’t believe we are, but I found it interesting that the question really can’t be answered.

In 1999, relatively unknown directors “The Wachowskis” burst onto the scene with the original film that would change the world of sci-fi film. Okay, I even enjoyed the two sequels, not as much as the original, but they were still fun and visually stunning. When this was announced, my mind started to spin in circles, and I had so many questions! Without spoiling anything, it would be challenging for the fourth film to exist with some of the key actors returning. This was one of the most significant lingering issues, and I won’t lie; the solution given wasn’t worth the excitement. Lilly Wachowski decided not to return for this film, instead leaving the writing and directing to her sister Lana Wachowski alone. There are rumors that the reasoning behind this was a disagreement on the film’s direction. I honestly can see and understand that entirely.

The nostalgic factor was where the film succeeded; it was everywhere, from the story to the returning cast members. However, the cast that decided not to return left a massive scar on the film, and the solution, instead of writing them out, was far from satisfying. I think that was my biggest issue throughout; instead of simply moving on, Lana decided to try and make in-world excuses as to why so many things changed and were different.

After watching the film, my first comment to my friends was this “can a film be arguably bad but also truly enjoyable?” It seems odd, but as much as I hated so many aspects of the film, I enjoyed it more than I had any right to. In the end, I had to go with my heart and rate it what I really felt was fair. It was probably closer to 1.5/5 stars, but I gave it that extra half because I was on the edge of my seat the entire film. Whether I liked the experience or not, I still wanted to take it all in. I was also kind of let down that there weren’t many “new” effects; the original trilogy had many new and groundbreaking visual effects. This one gave a few little moments but nothing genuinely awe-inspiring.
I honestly don’t see the story of “The Matrix” continuing on screen; I could see a remake/reboot someday with a different director and cast. The idea of the matrix is ripe with ideas and has an endless story to tell ultimately. If there were ever a sequel book written, I would jump on the opportunity to see what unfolds.

Overall, I still don’t know that I fully agree with my rating. If you loved the originals or are curious, I still suggest seeing it. As with most of my reviews, they’re just my thoughts. My favorite part of film is that two people can watch the same film and have two entirely different experiences.

  1. I honestly couldn’t bring myself to watch it. I love Keanu but.. I just couldn’t mess with my nostolgia around the original film. After reading your review I think that even though it may give me a glimmer of hope to watch it. I just can’t do it. Still love the honesty you provided on your personal struggle with the film.
