One of the biggest surprises to me of the year, honestly! As usual, I go in, knowing as little about the movie as possible, and whoa! This is not what I was expecting, but somehow that’s fantastic! I could describe the plot to you, but you would likely laugh and never want to watch it. I don’t think I could do the plot justice without making it sound insane. Although in reality, that’s part of what makes it so great.

If you’re thinking about checking this out, do yourself a favor and go in blind as I did. Don’t read the synopsis; just know that J.K. Simmons is “in the film” and plays a role that I could never imagine. Outside of Simmons, the only other leading actor is Ryan Kwanten (TRUE BLOOD, DEAD SILENCE), and he does a fantastic job. He has to act by himself for most of the film, and many scenes give me the same feeling I had when I watched the original SAW.

I’ve mentioned this in a few previous reviews, but anyone with an issue with Shudder originals is missing out. While they haven’t all been home runs, I would say more times than not; I genuinely enjoy them. They’re often creative, and you can tell they’re director/writer driven instead of films coated in studio interference.

If you’re looking for a unique and “intimate” horror film that relies on thriller aspects, I recommend checking this out. Often you’ll read about me panning a movie for “going weird” just for the sake of it. However, I don’t think that’s the case here; my only real knock on the film would be I wish that they hadn’t wrapped it up the way they did. It would have been marvelous if they left it a little more open-ended and open to your interpretation.
