RAVING REVIEW: A fun surprise that I wasn’t expecting at all. I was ready for a pretty by-the-number thriller on a boat. Instead, I got an intelligent story with a fun twist that entertained me the entire time.

This was the feature-length directorial debut by Kate Cox and was a great way to start. The film isn’t perfect, and it won’t go down as an all-time classic; however, it was well done and offered a lot of intelligent moments that I wasn’t expecting. I was impressed by the narrative of the story; while I’m not familiar with writer David Benton the writing in this was incredibly sharp. There’s something special about a story that primarily takes place at sea that doesn’t involve a shark.

The lead of the film Ella-Rae Smith (THE STRANGER, INTO THE BADLANDS), did a great job with the role, and I struggled the entire film trying to remember where I recognized her from until I remembered her role in INTO THE BADLANDS. While Smith is the lead, she shares most of the screen time with Matthew Daddario (SHADOWHUNTERS, DELIVERY MAN) and Jessica Alexander (GET EVEN, THE LITTLE MERMAID,) who were perfect in their roles. Their chemistry gave the film the level of believability that it had.

If you’re looking for an edge-of-your-seat thriller, this may not be the pick; this is more an intelligent thriller that will keep you guessing the entire film. Some simple twists may be slightly predictable, which made the experience fun. It left you thinking that you knew exactly what was coming; however, you don’t always.

If you’re out shopping on new release Tuesday (my birthday!) 10/4, make sure you pick this one up. I would be surprised if most weren’t able to enjoy the film. Sometimes it's more important to have fun than be “the most important film of the year.” There’s nothing wrong with just enjoying a film for what it is.
