What an experience! I don’t think this is like anything that I can remember watching. It was a weird experience because it felt like every second of the four hours, yet it also flew by in a breeze. I think it was helped by the fact that the films were also broken up into sections instead of just two two-hour parts. Altogether these films combine for a four-hour+ run time, and wow.

These most definitely aren’t something for everyone; you need to know what you’re getting yourself into before checking these out. They’re a slow burn but have so much to give. I was shocked when I got access to the films towards the end of my Venice experience. So I moved some things around and was able to fit in the screenings.

They may be the best example of dialogue usage I can remember seeing in recent history. The film's runtime lets them explore things that a typical experience wouldn’t. This enables you to dive into the film's story instead of skimming over it and jumping from one scene to the next. At the same time, I have to question whether or not that is fair. If a film extends its runtime, does that give them an unfair advantage? Or do they benefit from the longer runtime because of what is being said and done?

This will remain one of my favorite film-watching experiences of the year, even if they aren’t my favorite films of the year. It's ironic how that ends up working out and says a lot about what makes a movie great vs. what makes your experience great. The best of two different worlds all rolled into one.
