RAVING REVIEW: After the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, generations of veterans and their relatives seek solace in their rural hometowns. Patient, exquisite shots examine enduring community traditions and reveal the inwardness of private lives.

Current rules for Best International Feature were established in 2020 when the category was re-titled from Best Foreign Language Film. To support Greenstein’s proposal, members of the motion picture industry and representatives from other arts organizations have signed letters to the Board.

Submitting 6655 MOUNT VERNON ROAD would allow Academy members to view the entire film on the Academy Screening Room member site and choose whether to nominate.

Nominating 6655 MOUNT VERNON ROAD for Best International Feature could mean that twenty-four seconds of the 95th Oscars broadcast show how, in another country, they remember the valiant men and women who have served our country.

For years, I wanted to make a film about how it felt as a child to witness my hometown’s tradition of honoring veterans at high school football games. On 30 August 2021, the United States withdrew from Afghanistan, and I flew to Iowa to begin shooting. Transforming a public moment of remembrance into a twenty-four-second awards show clip illustrates the strangeness of creating a competition for memorial rituals. 6655 Mount Vernon Road takes its title from the address of a defunct television company office near where I grew up. Repurposing the existing framework for Best International Feature creates analogies to U.S. military service and policy, and what it means to be part of a global community.” – Jonah Greenstein
